The Honesty of a Woodcutter

There lived a woodcutter in a village. One day he was cutting wood near a river. Suddenly, his axe fell into the river. The river was very deep, the woodcutter did not know how to swim or dive. Therefore, he was sitting there sadly. Then a wonderful thing happened. A beautiful fairy appeared before the woodcutter.

She wanted to know why he was sitting alone in a pensive mood. The woodcutter told her everything in detail. Hearing the whole incident, she felt pity for him and assured to help him. The fairy then dived into the water of the river and came back with an axe made of gold. She showed the axe and asked him whether it was his. The woodcutter politely replied in the negative. So again she dived into the river and came back with a silver one. This time also the woodcutter refused to take it since it was not his axe. His axe was made of iron. So the fairy went under the water for the third time and came back with the real axe of the woodcutter.

The woodcutter was delighted to see his own axe. The fairy became very pleased at the honesty of woodcutter and gave back his axe. The woodcutter expressed his gratitude getting his lost axe back. When the woodcutter was about to go, the fairy gave him the other axes too as a reward of his honesty.
