Andrcles and a Lion

Once upon a time, there lived a slave named Andrcles who was being tortured by his master. To get rid of from this hard punishment and difficulty, one day he ran away from his master and hid himself in the forest. He wandered there for a long time. Then he entered in a cave and after a few moments he just heard a lion near him groaning and roaring terribly. So, Androcles was in despair; he had not strength to rise and run away. But when the great beast came up to him instead of attacking him it kept on moaning and groaning and looking at Androcles, who saw that the lion was holding out his right paw, which was covered with blood and much swollen. Looking more closely at it Androcles saw a great big thorn pressed into the paw, which was the cause of all the lion’s trouble. Plucking up courage he seized hold of the thorn and drew it out of the lion’s paw, but soon after found such relief from it that he rubbed up against Androcles and showed, in every way that he knew, that he was truly thankful for being relieved from such pain. Instead of eating him up he brought him a young deer that he had slain, and Androcles managed to make a meal from it. For some time the lion continued to bring the game he had killed to Androcles, who became quite fond of the huge beast. They lived together until the emperor’s men found Androcles and took him back. As a punishment for fleeing, Androcles was thrown inside a ring to be eaten up by lions. Lots of people, including the emperor gathered to watch this spectacle. The lion came. But instead of eating him up, it stroked and caressed Androcles. It was the same lion that he had helped in the forest! Shocked at this strange behaviour, the emperor demanded an explanation. When Androcles explained what had happened, he was pardoned and the lion was set free.
